From Our Experts:

-A common misconception is that the garage door opener lifts the weight of the entire door. Although the opener does move the door - the springs, and other parts are doing the heavy lifting. With a properly operating door, the opener can move it open and closed for years, because they aren't working very hard. Routine maintenance is a great way to make sure your door is operating properly and that your garage door opener lasts!

-Since July 1st, 2019 in California,  any opener installed has to include an incorporated battery backup due to senate bill 969. This bill also states that a door installed must be connected to an opener that has a battery backup.

-Openers can do amazing things. For instance, the Liftmaster model 8550wlb has an incorporated battery backup, a timer to close and a motion sensing wall control that turns the lights on every time you walk into the garage. They are almost completely silent, and you can connect it to your home's wifi allowing you to monitor whether your door is open, or closed and operate it from anywhere in the world. Imagine laying in bed, wondering if you closed the door, and simply check your phone, and close it if necessary, without getting up...

-Any opener installed must include an inherrant entrapment device, meaning the door must reverse upon contact with an object, in addition they must also include a non contact reverse, or in other words a safety eye. And these safety eyes must be installed no more than 6 inches from the floor. The idea being, if a child gets hit by the door, their body will break the beam preventing the door from closing.
